Is Full Scale Internet TV Just Around The Corner?

As the internet TV market continues to digest the ground breaking news that MSN have managed to secure exclusive internet rights to the Super Bowl it seems that this sector is ready to move forward. Many in the industry are suggesting that use of the internet as a medium for live TV is just around the corner, something that would reduce the cost of traditional TV broadcasting and open the TV industry to a market which is many times greater than what is currently available. So what next?

While the MSN deal is not a live deal as such, in that they will only be allowed to show delayed highlights together with expert analysis and fan comments, we are slowly edging towards top quality live TV on the internet. The only real issue is one of security and how the TV companies could protect their TV broadcasts and ensure that where applicable Pay TV is feasible. It is the fact that the rights to such events as the Super Bowl are among the most expensive in the world and the TV companies need to ensure they have a route to cover their costs and making a profit. What type of security will be required?

Even though we have seen great leaps and bounds in the quality of online security there are still a number of areas which need to be tightened up, with many websites using expert knowledge of how the internet works to gain access to unauthorized areas. This is something which is costing the industry a substantial amount of money now, but the current figure would be a drop in the ocean if events such as the Super Bowl were to be hacked.

Slowly we are seeing a realisation that technology needs to catch up with demand because if the traditional TV companies do not take up the baton and run with it, we will surely see the emergence of an online broadcasting giant to match them – and one that will have a potential market of billions to aim at from day one!
