Online TV Set To Take The World By Storm
As the internet continues to take on the traditional media markets we are seeing more and more TV programs appearing on the internet. This trend seems set to continue well into the future, with the likes of the BBC recently agreeing a deal with YouTube to showcase many of their forthcoming programs, and we are even set to see nearly live coverage of the forth coming Super Bowl.
So has there been a sea change in the sector?
While many media companies are not convinced that live internet TV is quite ready for the superhighway, the power of sites such as YouTube has called the hand of many media companies. The perfect medium to for people to smuggle TV coverage onto the net for millions of viewers to see there is no way that even the mighty YouTube can act quick enough to ensure illegal clips are not shown on the site.
Thankfully with the BBC changing their mind about the long term position they will hold on the internet, this is sure to see other companies follow suit. When you consider that there are literally thousands of TV channels around the world, many of which are seriously considering moving online, it seems obvious that slowly we are edging towards the merger of the internet and traditional TV. In order to rubber stamp this sea change on the internet it may a formal joint venture company between the likes of the BBC and Microsoft ; something which has been much rumoured in the past but not happened as yet.
There is no doubt that while a little slower than many people had hoped, we are seeing a genuine move towards live TV on the internet, something which will revolutionize the media markets which we know today. Who will be the first to break ranks and take the plunge?
