Will The Onset Of Broadband Affect the Future Delivery Of Sky TV?
While there can be few TV companies in the world which have had such an impact on the TV market, many people are now asking whether it may be Sky TV who take the plunge and move online sooner rather than later. Even though the industry is split as to whether they would and the possible implications, it seems that internet delivery is something which is being given some serious consideration in the corridors of Sky TV. So what are the pros and cons of such a move?
Pros
While the market for Sky TV is probably the largest in the industry, the potential online market would dwarf the current audience figures. The fact that their broadcasts would in effect be available to everybody around the world would move the company to another league with regards to audience figures and advertising income.
There is also the likelihood that by using the internet as a medium for delivering their content they would be able to cut back dramatically on their operating costs, and it would also eliminate the need for specific cables or sky dishes. This reduced cost would attract more viewers and also ensure that there were more funds available for investment into content and TV programs rather than the delivery side of the business.
Cons
Even though broadband has moved ahead at great pace over the last 10 years, there are still concerns that the current speeds available would not be able to support the demands of broadcasting quality live stream TV to the internet. The likes of Sky TV and other satellite broadcasters around the world are concerned that by introducing a service when the infra-structure is not in place, they may cause a viewer back lash which could set the industry back years in the eyes of the consumer.
We have touched upon the subject of security of the transmissions in our earlier articles on the site, and this for many remains one of the major issues. Broadband speeds are increasing and the UK in particular is set for substantial speed increases over the next 12 months. However it is the security of the actual sites / transmissions which have held back some of those in the industry, although once these issues are resolved it should be all systems go for online tv!
