While the likes of the Radio Times have been something of an institution in the UK for many years, there are many people now asking whether such offline publications have had there day. The internet is quicker, more accessible and more often than not it is all free, so are the likes of the Radio Times set to disappear?
Even though there have been many changes online there will always be a market for offline TV publications, with the Radio Times still heading the queue of quality periodicals in the UK. However, in order to convert their offline reputation onto the internet they need to embrace the changes in technology and give their readers more choice. Thankfully the major TV guides all have an online presence now with many of these operations actually pulling in more advertising revenue than they earn from their offline editions.
When you strip away all of the technology of the internet, the news and reviews, the internet is really just an information exchange. Whether you are exchanging views on the football, offering someone the chance to buy a product or supplying basic information to your readers, information is the key and current / unique information at that. Simply planting a TV guide onto the net will not satisfy the surfer of today, they want to see something a little different, they want to be involved and they want it now!
The best basic information sites on the internet all have an interactive area, a way to keep their readers coming back, and a way of making them feel part of your community. The more they are allowed to comment the more chance they will come back, although there need to be safeguards to ensure no inappropriate TV information appears online.
The truth is that there will always be a need for online and offline TV schedules, but the competition for online supremacy will be a whole lot tougher than the offline version!
