Max Payne a first person shooter game released in 2001, became a rage amongst the gaming community. Based on the high success of the first game, a second iteration soon followed. Now to take advantage of the Payne fans that just do not seem to have enough of their hero, Twentieth Century Fox have decided to make and distribute the movie based on the game.
Max Payne, the movie due October 2008, has Mark Wahlberg in the titular role and is directed by John Moore of the “Behind Enemy Lines” fame. Hoping to repeat the success the game had, care has been taken to bear close resemblance to the look and feel of the game. The plot as in the game involves Max Payne losing his wife and baby daughter to some “Valkyr” drug users. Payne is a DEA agent and gets involved in a case laced with murders. He along with Mona Sax, played by Mila Kunis, who seeks to avenge her sister’s death are drawn into a conspiracy and are hunted by the underworld, the police and a vengeful corporation. The trailer for Max Payne debuted at Comic-con 2008, where fans were treated to a teasing footage of their protagonist. The trailer seems to suggest the involvement of forces beyond mere human abilities. We are also given hints about the usage of the bullet-time mode that the game made infamous. The film also stars Chris O’Donnell, Beau Bridges and Donal Logue in strong roles. Amaury Nolasco from “Prison break” fame plays the antagonist Jack Lupino, a being immersed in the death and destruction of the world and his belief in blood sacrifices has something to do with the supernatural.
Max Payne with action man Wahlberg in the lead promises a lot of entertainment and pop corn fun, whether it will overcome the game to movie curse will be something we have to wait and watch.
