48 passengers are left stranded on a deserted island after a horrible and bloody plane crash. They are hundreds of miles away from civilization and they have to find a way to survive the harsh conditions on the island. They have to learn how to respond and overcome the many obstacles and dangers on the island, but they also have to learn how to live with each other and cooperate in order to survive. However, no matter how good they are at surviving the conditions on the island itself, they pretty soon become aware that it is not just the harsh nature they will have to face and fight.

Soon they discover that the island has more dangers in store for them such as the Dharma Initiative, Lost Numbers, the others and the black smoke. We can see occasional flashbacks as each group member has a rich and vivid past which is troubling them. The group has little chance of being rescued by some outside force, so they have to accept that they are stranded and that they have to learn how to cope with themselves as well as with each other in order to survive.
