In 1973 there is a serial killer on the loose, he has targeted young girls and women. Susie Salmon (Ronan) a 14 year old girl is one of his victims in suburban Pennsylvania.

She finds herself as in heaven and observes her family grieve for her. She also has a keen eye for her killer George Harvey (Stanley Tucci) who prepares to strike again and murder other innocent girls. Susie finds herself between a rock and a hard place trying to balance her urge for revenge and her desire to have her family recover from this tragic lose. Her father Jack suspects that the culprit is their neighbor Mr. Harvey.

Unfortunately the local police department does not have any evidence to entertain Jacks hunch. Susie from heaven follows her family through the years. She refuses to let her family go. As the years pass she keeps a watchful eye on her family and Harvey.
