The Taking of Pelham 123 is a thriller based on the novel by Morton Freedgood written under the alias John Godey. The name of the movie comes from the subway train’s radio call sign, the time a train lives the main depot, it gets a call sign, in this case it leaves at 1:23pm naming it Pelham 123. Armed gunmen take over a New York city subway train and hold all the passengers hostage, demanding 1 million dollar in ransom. This act sends confusion among policemen as they try and reason with the mastermind behind the crime, because the subway station is a dead-end route with minimal chance of escape, plus they have full control over the trains and where they travel to from the off site control center. After the ransom is handed over, the dispatcher tries to shut down the train so police can move in and capture their suspect but they quickly learn that Ryder’s (played by John Travolta) men have disabled the remove kill switch. John Travolta makes an escape, and Lieutenant Zachary Garber played by Denzel Washington goes on a game of cat and mouse hunting him throughout the alleys of NYC until he corners and captures his fugitive, making him stand before justice.
